It all started back in 2008 when Alexa Hoffman began college at the University of South Carolina where she discovered The Flying Saucer. This was a place where she would go out for a beer and hang out with her friends. She knew this was a place that her father, John, would love!
John was a chemist who enjoyed brewing his own beer on the stove top at home. He decided to get Alexa a home brewing kit for Christmas. This present quickly became a joint family gift because everybody, including her younger brother Cody was fascinated.
Cody became intrigued in craft brewing after closely watching and continuously helping his dad at home. When Cody turned 18, he called brewery after brewery asking them to give him the chance to learn how to brew beer. He started out at Triumph Brewing in New Hope, PA. He then moved onto Twin Lakes Brewing Co. in Greenville, DE. After some time there, Cody traveled to England where he would attend brewing school for 8 months.
When Cody returned home, his dad had a vision... A family operated brewery!! As you could guess, everybody was on board! After a year of searching for the right location for the brewery and taproom, the Hoffman's finally found the perfect place! They bought the Garrett Snuff Mill in Yorklyn, DE in 2013. Their family adventure continued onto the next step!
After years of hard work and dedication, the building really turned around -- while still preserving as much of the historical feel as possible. Alex and Cody's uncle Fran is a custom carpenter and project manager, so he helped get the mill turned around. Their cousin, Nick, owns a marketing firm so he's been helping promote the business and brand.
Alexa is in charge of coordinating special events for the brewery and guests. Cody will be the Brew Master and will be working below the taproom in experimenting and creating new beer. Their mom, Georgiana, is in charge of handling the business side of the operations.
All that was left was coming up with a name... One day, Cody pulled a beer out of the fridge and water began to drip off of it -- condensation. He thought, "THAT'S THE DEW POINT!" and well... I'm sure you can use your imagination to finish the story...
My experience at Dew Point was absolutely outstanding and I just want to take the time to applaud everyone who put in the time and effort to make this brewery the place that it is today. When I think of Dew Point, I think of a wonderful brewery in a great location with a good atmosphere! Somewhere I can go to grab a drink after a long day, to catch up with an old friend, or just talk to some locals.
The large, brick building that is located on a lot of land is absolutely breathtaking. They did an outstanding job making use of an older antique building.
Christian, Shane and I visited Dew Point one night after going to Liquid Alchemy Beverages. When we pulled up, we noticed the parking lot was spacious and offered plenty of spots for customers. There was a nice outdoor area at Dew Point but unfortunately nobody was outside because it was late and cold.
When we walked up the stairs to go in, I noticed the wood theme throughout the building. The tap room was very spacious and open offering plenty of seating.
We decided to sit at the bar -- as usual. Behind the bar, I noticed a small snack display, some growlers and their menu board which really stood out to me.
When we first sat down, we were greeted by the great bartender, Mike (here's your shoutout!) He welcomed us for coming and asked if any of us have ever been here before -- none of us have. Anyways, he explained the menu and the different types of beers. As he talked, the 2 older gentleman sitting next to us chimed in. It's safe to say we had great entertainment for the next hour or so.
The taproom had 10 beers available so Christian and I got 2 flights and sampled every beer that they had. We're not alcoholics, I promise! LOL. I'm just very picky when it comes to a lot of things... especially my beer. I'm really into sours, pale ales and ciders. I'm not the biggest fan of the dry, hoppy types of beers.
So, at Dew Point, it was either a hit or miss for me. I enjoyed a select few beers while not liking the rest. Just because I wasn't the biggest fan of their beer, doesn't mean you should skip the opportunity to check them out -- because seriously, I HIGHLY recommend coming here!! They also have a changing tap system so what they have this week, they might not have next week. I look forward to going back and giving more of their beers a try!
That being said, here is my rating:
Atmosphere - ★★★★★ - The atmosphere at Dew Point was great! The lighting was nice, it wasn't crowded or overly loud. There was a nice sense of community and a good vibe to this place! I can't wait to go back when the outside section is being used!
Beer - ★★★★ - This was the one rating I had a hard time with. I didn't necessarily care for a majority of the beer but that's understandable because I'm so picky. So, then I tried to take into consideration Christian's thoughts and opinions. He really enjoyed the beer and the many different tastes. So, I settled for in the middle.
Employees - ★★★★★ - Mike, our bartender, was great! I was able to really interact with him since the bar wasn't crowded. It was nice getting to know him and hearing him explain the different types of beers. I got to talk to him about my blog as well! This was right after I decided the name for my blog, "Beersperience."
Location - ★★★★★ - The location for this brewery is perfect. It's on a bunch of land with plenty of parking. The building is a stunning antique. I don't think you could ask for a better place to start a brewery -- and hey, it's not an industrial park!!
Social Media - ★★★★ - Dew Point posts some great content on their platforms. I just wish they posted different content on each page instead of it being the same picture. However, I did reach out to Dew Point via Instagram for something blog related and they responded rather quickly -- within 5 minutes! I applaud you.
Total: 4.6 STARS!
Cheers!!
