Midnight Oil Brewing Company unveiled its doors to the public on Super Bowl Sunday in 2018, marking the realization of a passion that began over a decade ago for one of its founders, Mike Dunlap. Starting as a homebrewing enthusiast, Dunlap's beers gained popularity at private events and gatherings, sparking discussions with T.J. McGrath, a fellow CompUSA employee who shared his fervor for craft beer. The seeds of a dream were planted as the two envisioned the possibility of opening their own brewery.
Teaming up with Joe Stickel, the trio embarked on a five-year journey to establish their brewery. After overcoming challenges and honing their craft, they finally found the perfect location in Newark, DE. Its strategic proximity to towns like Glasgow, Bear, Middletown, and Elkton, which lacked craft breweries, made it an ideal choice.
Distinguishing itself from many breweries situated on main streets, MOBC stands in an office park—a trend gaining popularity for its cost-effectiveness and ample brewing space. Despite the emergence of other breweries in nearby towns, the founders remain optimistic, supported by Delaware's ranking of 20th in breweries per capita, leaving room for continued growth according to Brewers Association statistics.
The name "Midnight Oil" was inspired by Dunlap's late-night brewing sessions after his family had retired for the night, signifying the commitment to their craft.
MOBC's taproom, boasting 97 seats, offers a rental space for private events accommodating up to 40 people. The brewery hosts small acoustic performances and features food trucks for lunch and dinner, though a kitchen may be a future consideration.
Christian and I went to visit Midnight Oil a few months ago, back in October. It was my first time there and I really enjoyed myself. The bar wasn't too packed when we arrived so we were able to sit down and enjoy ourselves and meet the beertender. The building revealed a welcoming atmosphere with a view into the brewing process, a shelf of board games, and a merchandise corner.
Of course, we ordered a flight to try multiple beers, which we both really enjoyed. Some of these beers were extremely experimental that they would probably never be able to fully replicate again so it was interesting being able to try them. They have about 10-12 taps behind the bar that are constantly being rotated as experimental beer is being brewed.
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Midnight Oil and the interactions that I had with all of the employees.
That being said, here is my rating:
Atmosphere - ★★★★ - The atmosphere at MOBC was outstanding. It was open and bright with plenty of space to sit and/or stand.
Beer - ★★★★ - I enjoyed some of the beer while others... not so much. However, I took into account other people's opinions as well for this category.
Employees - ★★★★★ - Every employee that I have met at MOBC has been absolutely wonderful and pleasant. They really interact and take their customers thoughts and ideas into consideration.
Location - ★★★★ - I think the location of the brewery was a great choice. As mentioned before, it's located in an office park, which is becoming fairly common nowadays. Also, going off their slogan, "Burning the Midnight Oil" they really target the employees within the industrial complex to come and enjoy a beer or two after work.
Social Media - ★★★ - MOBC is beginning to branch out on their Facebook now, more than ever before with live videos and multiple events every single week. However, they haven't use Twitter in quite some time which could be a downfall for the company. I also personally believe that their website could use a little refresher as well.
Total: 4.0 STARS!
Well, cheers for now!!
